If you are like the 50% of men over 50 who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia, you might be looking for a treatment that will reduce your BPH symptoms.
Some consider traditional surgery or drug therapies, but others do not want to cope with the side effects of such treatments. You might have heard of minimally invasive treatments such as the Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy, but might be wondering if these types of treatments are “too good to be true”. To answer this question, let’s first take a look at how Rezūm works.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is caused by the natural enlargement of the prostate in older men. When the prostate gland begins to be too large in size, it begins to put pressure on the urethra, preventing urine from flowing directly through it.
The water vapour Rezūm therapy uses controlled doses of hot steam to directly ablate and reduce portions of the swollen prostate that are causing obstruction of the urethra. It does this by injecting steam in targeted areas of the prostate which will then attack and kill cells in the prostate. Over time, the body’s natural healing process will remove the dead cells, causing the prostate to decrease in size and, therefore, cease to put pressure on the urethra.
Although this procedure sounds very aggressive, it is actually very quick (lasting approximately 5 minutes) and relatively painless. The Rezūm treatment is a one-time, in-office/out-patient therapy, that does not require general anesthesia.
Rezūm is a minimally invasive surgical treatment that has repeatedly proven to be an effective and safe treatment of clinically significant BPH. Although it is a relatively new procedure, having been approved by the FDA in 2015, it has already won international praise for its success rate and minimal list of side effects. With Rezūm, patients can start seeing symptom improvement as early as two weeks after the treatment, and results remain durable for a confirmed 5 years.
Studies have also shown that Rezūm is an effective treatment for men suffering from more acute forms of BPH and who are experiencing severe symptoms such as urinary retention. One specific study published by Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases showed that catheter dependent men can achieve successful cessation of catheter dependency with the new Rezūm water vapour therapy.
