Effective non-invasive BPH treatment

Rezūm Therapy for BPH Treatment

Rezūm water vapour therapy is a safe and effective new BPH treatment that can offer longer term relief from symptoms without the risks and discomfort of surgery.

The therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate that uses controlled doses of hot steam to directly ablate and reduce portions of the swollen prostate that are causing obstruction of the urethra.

Rezūm has undergone rigorous studies and is recommended by the Canadian Urological Association as a minimally invasive BPH symptom reduction method for men interested in retaining preserving erectile and ejaculatory function. It was also approved by the US FDA in 2015 for the treatment of the enlarged prostate.

SanoMed is the first clinic to offer Rezūm in Quebec and Eastern Canada.

How Does Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy Work?

Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses the natural energy stored in a few drops of water to treat the excess prostate tissue causing BPH symptoms. So you can get back in the game quickly. No need to be in the hospital. And no need to continue taking BPH medications.

Rezūm is a transurethral needle ablation method that differs from the traditional TUNA, which delivers heat to the excess tissue in the prostate, and instead provides radiofrequency generated thermal energy in the form of water vapour.

The Rezūm Procedure

The doctor will use a hand-held device that passes through the urethra to reach the prostate. A tiny amount of steam is injected into the prostate to impact part of the swollen prostate tissue that is putting pressure on the urethra and causing the bothersome symptoms of BPH.

The energy transported by the water damages the offensive cells, which in turn causes them to die. Over time, the body absorbs the treated tissue as part of the natural healing process, and as it does, symptoms of BPH are relieved.

Lasting Results

Clinical data has shown that the Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy is safe and effective in relieving lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH without compromising sexual function – and the treatment appears effective for at least five years.

Since use of the procedure is relatively new, there are no long-term studies to show if it will continue to provide effective symptom relief beyond five years.

Until more physicians are trained in the technique, there are a limited number of Canadian clinics where men have access to Rezūm, including SanoMed.

Risks and Benefits of Rezūm Water Vapor Therapy

The goal of Rezūm is similar to other BPH treatments – the removal of excess tissues – and the use of hot vapour as a tool can offer the desired results with minimal side effects and a relatively low risk of complications.

The procedure can be performed in our clinic during a short visit. No general anaesthesia is necessary and most men are able to return to regular activities within a few days.

BPH symptom reduction is expected within a month. Longer term studies have demonstrated a sustained symptom relief of over up to five years.

Rezūm has been proven to reduce urinary symptoms for many men who have been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

If you’re suffering from BPH, Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy can provide these benefits:

  • No more BPH medications and their side effects
  • Clinical studies support that Rezūm relieves symptoms safely and effectively
  • Most patients see symptom improvement within two weeks
  • Simple in-office/out-patient therapy
  • Does not require general anaesthesia
  • Preserves erectile and urinary functions
  • Ability to return to regular activities within a few days
  • Symptom relief that lasts for years
  • No permanent implant

All treatments have inherent and associated risks. The Rezūm System is intended to relieve symptoms and obstructions, and reduce prostate tissue associated with BPH. You should talk with your doctor about benefits and risks before moving forward with any treatment option.

Potential risks include but are not limited to painful urination (dysuria), blood in the urine (hematuria), blood in the semen (hematospermia), decrease in ejaculatory volume, suspected urinary tract infection (UTI), and urinary frequency, retention or urgency.

As a minimally invasive procedure, Rezum® has demonstrated fewer side effects compared to those typically seen with surgical therapies, but as with any interventional procedure, some of the following side effects may temporarily occur:

  • Painful urination
  • Blood in urine
  • Blood in semen
  • Frequent urination
  • Inability to urinate or completely empty the bladder
  • Need for short-term catheterization

Most of these events resolve within three weeks of the procedure, but there is a possibility some of these effects may be prolonged.

Clinical Studies & Results

Clinical data has shown that the Rezūm Water Vapour Therapy is safe and effective in relieving lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH without compromising sexual function. The goal of the treatment is to relieve symptoms so you can get back to your life and resume your daily activities.

This new therapy has been approved by the US FDA and is included in the most recent (2018) Canadian Urological Association guidelines for treatment of BPH symptoms.

Published data from the Rezūm clinical studies reported clinically significant improvement in BPH symptoms within two weeks, with continued improvement out to three months, after which these symptom improvements have been consistent and durable, with no impairment of sexual function.

“The quality of life for half of all men between the ages of 51 and 60, and more than 90 percent of men over age 80, has been negatively impacted by the symptoms of BPH,” said Bob Paulson, president and CEO of NxThera. “For men who don’t want to or cannot commit to life-long medical therapies or undergoing more invasive procedures to treat their BPH, our Rezūm System offers a safe, effective and durable BPH treatment option that preserves sexual function.”

The medical consensus to date appears to be that Rezum therapy for lower urinary tract symptoms is a relatively effective and low risk option for men with BPH. Importantly, it does not damage a man’s sexual performance or expose him to the longer term side effects that can accompany drug therapy.

The CUA describes Rezūm as a new and emerging therapy in the 2018 guideline on male lower urinary tract symptoms/benign prostatic hyperplasia, which states:

Ablation using the Rezum® system (uses the thermodynamic principle of convective energy transfer), report significant improvement of IPSS and Qmax at three months and sustained until 12 months with preservation of erectile and ejaculatory function.

Reported two-year results have confirmed durability of the positive clinical outcome.

We suggest that Rezum system of convective water vapour energy ablation may be considered an alternative treatment for men with LUTS interested in preserving ejaculatory function, with prostates <80 cc, including those with median lobe (conditional recommendation based on moderate-quality evidence).

Canadian urologists are recommending Rezum as an option for Canadian men who meet the treatment criteria.
