What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Rezūm Procedure

If you are considering the Rezūm Water Vapour procedure to manage your BPH symptoms, it is natural to have questions about what the process is like. Learning what to expect before, during, and after the procedure can help you feel more informed and at ease as you make decisions about your health.

We will break down each stage of the Rezūm treatment, providing insights on preparation, the procedure itself, and the recovery process. By the end, you will have a clearer picture of how this minimally invasive therapy can help improve your quality of life and relieve the discomfort of BPH.

Before the Treatment: How Should I Prepare?

Firstly, to help assess whether you are a good candidate for Rezūm, the doctor will use a flow rate bladder scan to see how well your bladder is emptying. You may also be asked to keep track of the amounts of fluids that you drink. After this evaluation, the doctor may perform a prostate ultrasound and take a telescopic look at your prostate.

Once it has been determined that you are a suitable candidate for Rezūm, your doctor may ask you to stop anticoagulants (blood thinners) a few days to a week prior to your procedure. Additionally, antibiotics may be prescribed in order to reduce the chances of getting an infection. This antibiotic prescription should be started the night before the procedure.

Anti-inflammatories are given the day before and after the procedure, and an alpha blocker prescription may be given to improve the flow of urine after the procedure. Your doctor will discuss any pain medications that will be used. On the day of the procedure, a light meal and lots of fluids are recommended.

The Rezūm Procedure

Rezūm Therapy is performed right in the clinic, and completed in one short appointment. The actual procedure takes only minutes; however, plan on spending approximately two hours for the entire appointment due to recovery and observation after the operation. Depending on the size of the prostate, the procedure consists of two to seven injections, each nine seconds long.

Upon arriving, the patient will be instructed to eliminate urine, and the bladder is then checked. If there is still more urine in the bladder, it is drained to avoid having to drain it during the procedure.

Here are  step-by-step instructions on what to expect from the procedure itself:

  • Both the prostate and the penis are numbed. The doctor will use a hand-held device that passes through the urethra to reach the prostate.
  • A tiny amount of steam is injected into the prostate to impact part of the swollen prostate tissue that is putting pressure on the urethra and causing the bothersome symptoms of BPH.
  • During each 9-second treatment, sterile water vapor is released throughout the targeted prostate tissue. When the steam contacts the prostate tissue, all the stored energy is released into the tissue.
  • Your doctor will determine the amount of treatments you need, based on the size of your prostate.
  • Because of the initial swelling, a catheter is then inserted, which will remain for two to five days. The catheter is hooked to a bag that stays on the leg and is covered by pants. A driver is required to take the patient home.

Over time, your body’s natural healing response absorbs the treated tissue, shrinking the prostate. With the extra tissue removed, the urethra opens, reducing BPH symptoms. Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks, and maximum benefit may occur within three months. Patient responses can and do vary.

Recovery Expectations

After your procedure, continue oral antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a catheter for a few days to ease urination during healing. It is important to avoid activities that may irritate your prostate.

Symptoms will get worse before they get better. Generally, at two weeks symptoms begin to stabilize. At four weeks, patients are back where they were before the procedure, and at six weeks patients start to get off medication.

If you experience discomfort, it is recommended that you take a mild pain medication, as recommended by your doctor, try a warm bath or sitting on a hot water bottle, or consider temporarily removing things like caffeine, chocolate and alcohol from your diet.
